A project with the Design Exchange online

I just realised that an old project I worked on is now fully online (and comes up when Google searching 'Qasim Virjee' ;) )

Connecting the World Through Canadian Design is a Virtual Museum of Canada multimedia exhibition that I shot and edited some video clips for.  The exhibition was arranged and curated by the Design Exchange in Toronto and basically follows a few case studies of how Canada's unique cultural and geographical aspects alter design practice within it.

You can find out some info on the Design Exchange at http://www.dx.org (yes, they really need a new website).  read more »

About people

At some point last night I was inspired to write out 5 points describing the nature of people.  Note: this came to me after an hour or so catching up on the past month or so's news from the 'Web 2.0' world of Silicon Valley (as told by characters like Om Malik) - something I've been tuning out of to focus on visioning my future interaction with the Web - as a producer of content and sites.

People:

  1. Are attracted to spectacle,
  2. Prefer to comment on action as opposed to interaction,
  3. Want to personalize without questioning who they are and/or what they want,
  4. Will believe or dismiss rather than reason,
  5. More comfortably leave messages than converse in 'real time.'

South Africa embraces Open Source

If you're like me, you love *not* throwing Microsoft cash for bloated software and totally dug it when you discovered Open Office and NeoOffice (mac port).  Well, apparently, the South African government is also digging Open Source software so much that they've standardised the Open Document format within the gov't!

Meera Sethi .. avec blog

My friend Meera just started a new blog - worth checking out on the regular methinks:

http://www.meerasethi.blogspot.com/

I know, you might be thinking 'oh sh*t, yet another blog to add to my RSS aggregator' - come on, that's no way to think; the girl renamed her 'archives' title to 'shit, I missed it?' - she's obviously cool. :)

Shipping containers - lego for life

Something to do with living in Nairobi for 6+ years and seeing these things everywhere has made me  keenly ponder the various uses of Shipping Containers other than the obvious, which may be possible - since I was probably about 12 years old.

Here's some great examples: http://www.notcot.com/archives/2007/10/shipping_contai.php  read more »
