Tethering a mobile phone to Safaricom in Kenya for 3g/edge Net access on a computer

I struggled finding the answer to this one for some tough moments last week before giving up - then I went into a Safaricom store today to grab a USB/SIM dongle for my brother and got the details I needed to make my bluetooth connection work: so I thought I would post this info here and hope that it gets picked up by google for other likewisely-clueless chaps and lasses!

A couple of weeks back I heard rumor in Toronto that a strike was about to start - supposedly city trash (and other) workers were disgruntled at their [measly? what what] 18 paid sick days per year and were threatening the City with not turning up for work until they got more etc...
